Following the finals for European competition area, the finals for North American Competition Area of “Makerspace · 2017 Hangzhou High-level Overseas Talents Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition” was successfully concluded in Silicon Valley in USA in the after of Sept. 23rd local time. 17 innovative and entrepreneurship elites from North America gathered at the Silicon Valley for a showdown. After intense competition, 6 candidates, including Dr. Juncheng Liu who was graduated from Los Angeles Campus of University of California, were qualified for the finals. They will compete with the winners of European competition area in Hangzhou. Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Zheshang Venture Capital Yeyu Hua was invited to the activity.
Mr. Yuhong Jiang, the Science and Technology Consul of Consulate-General of P.R.C in San Francisco attended and addressed the competition. Be tolerant of Diversity, New Makerspace Star Shining in Silicon Valley
Most of the candidates of North American competition area were from Standford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, Columbia University, New York University, Johns Hopkins University and other famous universities, of which, 72 had obtained doctoral degree. Most of them had the experience of working in famous overseas enterprises and universities. Some participants had successful experience in business start-up. The overall quality and the strong lineup of the candidates displayed the powerful reserve of talent in Silicon Valley. For example, Chenyu Wang, a graduate of Stanford University, was the founder of Alohar Mobile, whose products and software engines covered 800 million overseas users. Alohar Mobile was later merged and acquired by Amap and Alibaba at a high price. Dr. Liu Juncheng, a graduate of Los Angeles Campus of University of California, had more than 12 years’ working experience in artificial intelligence field. The main members of his team were mainly from Berkerley University of California, Taiwan University and Tsinghua University with rich working experience in Google, IBM.
Since the beginning of the competition, North American Competition Area had totally received application materials from 253 qualified applicants. Most finalists of North American competition region highly praised the innovation and entrepreneurship environment of Hangzhou and would like to take Hangzhou as the starting point for distinguishing themselves in China. Zhang Min, a PhD of Harvard University, was a native of Hangzhou. When mentioning her hometown, she was full of sensation “With the G20 Hangzhou Summit, Hangzhou’s international reputation increased. The international atmosphere of the city became stronger. Also, it is the city where Alibaba, Netease, Hikvision and other industrial giants converged with concentrated elements for innovation and entrepreneurship and can provide opportunities for overseas students.”
It is reported that “Makerspace · Hangzhou High-level Overseas Talents Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition” have been successfully held for two sessions. Totally 50 projects have officially settled down with registered capital of more than 450 million Yuan. The competition focused on building resources concentration platform and let talent projects, VC capitals, incubation platforms, industrial channels and experts and human resources converge and collide in the platform through market-oriented operation. By integrating the entrepreneurship resources, the competition aimed to enhance project quality, intensify industrial connection, provide support for the participating projects in respects of policy, capital and incubation and help candidates to start business in Hangzhou.
Integrating Industry with Talents, Entrepreneurship Programs Involve Cutting-edge industries
The programs participated in the competition involved artificial intelligence, wearable equipment, virtual reality, gene sequencing and many other international emerging industries with excellent foundation for industrial production. For example, Dr. Liu Juncheng’s Kneron artificial intelligence program was dedicated to building portable artificial intelligence system on terminal equipment and providing a AI solutions equipped with both hardware and software. It greatly reduced AI’s dependence on network and improves the convenience and efficiency of AI. So far, the program has established cooperation with 5 Asian enterprises, including Tencent, Baidu and Honghai. Dr. Chunxiao Han, a graduate of New York University, was dedicated to air management products for individual spaces. The sprmio big data individual air management platform developed by him could detect the air condition anytime anywhere through the mobile phone terminal. The bpflex wearable-type sleeveless continuous blood pressure monitoring system developed by Doctor Ning Zhang, a researcher of Harvard Medical School, had overcame technical bottleneck and could realize non-invasive, continuous and wearable measurement.
11 special supporting units, including Hangzhou Shangcheng District, Jianggan District, Gongshu District, Xihu District, High-Tech (Binjiang) District, Xiaoshan District, Fuyang District, Economic and Technological Development Zone, Dajiangdong Industrial Agglomeration Area, Zhejiang Future Sci-Tech City, Qingshan Lake Sci-Tech City participated all segments of the competition. On the site of the finals of North American Competition Area, the units took initiative and assigned special personnel to trace the excellent projects in the whole process based on the industrial orientation of the respective districts and showed great sincerity in introducing talents.
This year, the competition strengthened cooperation with key industrial enterprises. Leading enterprises, such as Geely Group and Betta Pharmaceuticals, as the cooperative units of the competition, actively carried out project initiating and matchmaking and provided a more professional and precise industrial resources matchmaking.

All the judges invited by the competition were from well known VC and management institutions, including the Chairman of North America Huayuan Science and Technology Association and the Operation Partner of Sequoia CBC Cross-border Digital Industry Fund Lifeng Chen, CEO of Zheshang Venture Capital Yeyu Hua, Silicon Valley Technology VC Partner Pingrong Yu, Telegent Systems Partner Fang Li, Lede Capital Co-founder and Management Partner Minghui Sheng, CEO of Haibang Investment Gang Liang, Overseas Director of Betta Pharmaceuticals and Xcovery CEO Ling San, etc.
The judges commented precisely from the dimensions of talents, team, project, technology, market and investment.
